Many thanks, Robin. There are some other poems, yes: I'll post them here, if you like. Or do you want me to send them to you?

Lucky you! Let me know if you find any larrikin poems -- other than "Fanny Flukem's Ball." There's also supposed to be a cache of them among the broadsides held by the Mitchell Library in Sydney. But I'm 3,000 miles away. :-( I'll try and backchannel you some stuff on John Hall a.k.a Jack Hall a.k.a Sam Hall. Actual early texts are rare -- the earliest is a fragment in the Place MSS in the British Library, and that only goes back to the 1780s -- but it originates well before the current extant texts appear.
And the way it shifts into the music hall arena might interest you.

Best,

Hey, I've just been trawling through the Dead Bird for the first time: that's a coincidence! I will look for the ballad of Jack Hall pronto - may be worth a future post. Many thanks - Melissa

Interesting you mention Sam Hall, as he was himself a later development of the more subversive Jack Hall (of The Memoirs of the Right Villainous John Hall fame, which isn't by him in the first place), hung in London in 1707, before he moved onto the music hall boards.

The earliest versions of the ballad still retain a strong element of the Street.

More Dead Bird that Bulletin material.
